I said it the same way some folks say they don’t like sushi or country music. Then I climbed on sweet Amy Rey, and it turned out I just hadn’t met the right mare. Amy is a 2021 AQHA mare with the kind of feel you notice the second she takes a step. She has the mind of a veteran, a heart of pure gold and cow sense that does half the thinking for you. She’s steady in a way most horses pretend to be. ATVs ripping past, dirt bikes popping off, gunfire rolling over the hill, and she acts like she’s listening to a podcast you can’t hear. She just keeps on with the job like it’s Tuesday, never wasting energy on nonsense. (Wish I could say the same.) Her pedigree backs up everything you feel in the first five minutes. She is by Smart Reyvolution (2012), an NCHA money-earner and full brother to Dual Smart Rey with $330k+ earned, SVR Reyl Smart with $275k+, and Reys Smart Lookin with $82k+. Smart Reyvolution is a son of Dual Rey, one of the most influential sires the cutting world has ever seen with over 49.5 million dollars in progeny earnings. Her dam is by Gists High King, a sire known for producing real using horses that earned their keep in the arena and outside of it. She rides exactly the way she’s bred to. Amy is AQHA Ranching Heritage eligible, and we are happy to pay her in for a buyer who wants to take her that direction. Her cow sense is the quiet, confident kind that matters in real work. She pins an ear, softens her body, and reads a cow like she already knows how the story ends. Amy has covered big pastures, sorted in tight spots, and worked alleys where cattle test a horse’s patience, honesty, and sometimes their religion. She has been used on a yearling operation and handles the chaos like a professional. Whether you're shipping or when the alley is full of 900 to 1,000 pound steers trying to blow past her, she plants herself and makes them reconsider. She likes a challenge and is not afraid to whack one when it needs it. In the feedyard, her quick feet come in handy when the cattle get real creative about avoiding the gate. Rain or shine, deep or slick, she stands up in any pen and gets the job done from whichever side of the gate you are on. She is the kind you want with you on the tough days. What I like most is her switch. When you ask for it, she’ll come alive and spin like the ground is on fire, quick and catty with an automatic feel that keeps you right with her. The moment you’re done, she turns it off and will lope around with a string around her neck. Not dull. Not a push-style horse. Just broke, steady, and smart. A mare that can give you that kind of grit and still ride soft and simple is hard to find. She rides on a loose rein, has a great stop and back up, offers smooth lead departures and lead changes. Transitions up and down through her gaits without resistance, stays soft through her ribcage, and never argues about where her feet need to be. You can ride her bridleless not because she’s dull, but because she actually listens. Bit, halter, or nothing at all, she stays the same horse. Now, the part everyone loves to hear. I am 7 months pregnant, my balance isn’t what it used to be, and my center of gravity has filed a formal complaint. Amy is about the only horse on the place I trust not to exploit that. No buck. No freshness. No stupidity. And she has never once questioned the job. I can pull her from the pen on a below-freezing, windy Panhandle morning when the air stings your face, and she shows up 100%. Stands quiet, steps off soft, and goes straight to work. I’ve been able to sort and gather cattle, long-trot hills, and still play with spins and stops, and I have never had to question my safety for a second. I mean… I ride pens bridleless on her. Hello?! She stays honest and protects her rider while staying sharp enough to get a job done. Amy is truly the best of both worlds. If you want a horse you can trust more than common sense says you should, this is her. On the ground, she is as simple as they come. Easy to catch. Easy to saddle. Easy to haul. Easy for the farrier. She fits into any herd and stays low on the totem pole. She gets along with dogs, goats, chickens, ponies, and every critter that wanders by. The only thing I’ve seen her want to get after is a cow… which, frankly, is a personality trait I admire. She stands 14.3 hands and is the perfect size. UTD & ready to roll. Amy is sound, and healthy. And yes, vet checks are totally welcome! The truth is simple. I have not had this much fun on a horse in a long time. You never realize just how much you value a good mind until you’re pregnant and climbing on something with four legs and opinions. She is the one I reach for first and the one I put away last. Life is changing, and that is the only reason she is being offered for sale. If every mare was like Amy, geldings would be out of business. Want to visit about Amy? Call or text us 480-907-8516. She’s the kind that sells herself; we just answer the phone. For buyer assurance, please note: Amy has had no exposure to outside horses or facilities within the past 30 days. We are happy to offer 14 days of complimentary board after purchase to accommodate any transport needs or biosecurity concerns. She will be fully cleared by a licensed veterinarian with a same-day health certificate before she leaves. Transportation assistance available.
