Meet 🖤 Smoke 🖤
A beautiful, stout-made gelding with a gorgeous smoky black color, a kind eye, and the kindest gentlest attitude. We have known Smoke for years, and he is hands down one of the safest trail horses we have ever offered. If safety is at the very top of your list, Smoke is THAT horse.
11 years old, and standing 15hh.
On the ground, Smoke has good manners. He is easy to catch, stands tied quietly, bathes, loads, hauls, and behaves well for the vet and farrier.
Under saddle, Smoke is safe, steady, and forgiving. He is more whoa than go and prefers to ease along rather than be in a hurry. He has a comfortable walk, trot, and easy slow lope and has been ridden by beginners of all shapes, sizes, and experience levels. He has even been used to give riding lessons and build confidence! Smoke was previously owned and ridden by a gentleman in his 70s, and he is exactly the kind of horse that lets you relax, drop your hand, and enjoy your ride.
The same dependable gelding whether you ride him every day or give him time off. Saddle him up, step on, and go ride.
The longer you’re around horses, the more you realize that truly SAFE horses are hard to find. Plenty of horses are gentle, and plenty ride good, but there is a difference between quiet and the kind you genuinely trust to take care of whoever is sitting on their back. Smoke has proven himself over and over again. Our 3-year-old, Cooper, has taken Smoke trail riding and ridden him independently down the trail. There aren’t many horses in this world that I would turn my 3-year-old loose on, and Smoke is one of the few.
Out on the trail is where Smoke really shines. He is an amazing trail horse. He has been hauled to Buffalo River and ridden through steep hills, creek crossings, rocky terrain, mud, fallen trees, thick woods, and rough country and rivers. He is sure-footed, sensible, and confident. He doesn’t get in a hurry, and he isn’t looking for a reason to turn around and head home. He will ease along on a loose rein and let you actually enjoy the ride. We’ve even swam him and used him for a diving board in the river!
Smoke has been exposed to traffic, tractors, dogs, cattle, farm equipment, and all the everyday sights and sounds that come along with ranch life, and he isn’t afraid to go do a days work. He has plenty of miles and life experience under his belt, and very little rattles him.
He has also been a wonderful horse for the family. He is forgiving when cues aren’t perfect and doesn’t get rattled or fussy when someone makes a mistake. For someone who is nervous, inexperienced, getting back into riding after some time away, or simply doesn’t want to spend their ride wondering what their horse is going to do next, Smoke is worth his weight in gold!!
He is also a finished head and heel horse. It has been a few years since he has been used regularly in the roping pen, so he would need a little tuning back up, but the foundation and training are there.
Smoke is the kind of gelding people spend years looking for. Safe enough for the kids, seasoned enough for Grandma and Grandpa, forgiving enough for a beginner, and still trained enough to go do a job. He is one that can sit around, saddle up when you’re ready, and go enjoy the day. He’s truly one in a million- and we know his next partner will love him as much as we do!
Clean-legged, 100% sound, requires no maintenance. Passed his Pre Purchase Exam, completed by Equine Vet John Laster.
