Dakota has been part of my trekking horse operation for three years. She is very straightforward, has never had saddle pressure or sore spots, and always stands well and rather athletic. She does not gain excess weight, which is typical for her breed. She is barefoot and has often been ridden with hoof boots.
She is very sensitive but takes nothing amiss.
Her forward drive should not be suppressed immediately; she quickly responds to the rider’s cues, with only a brief “spark” without overreacting.
She has never bucked or done anything similar; I believe she simply doesn’t know how to.
She is very resilient; despite appearing excited, she remains very steady and always responsive.
Riding alone is also no problem.
Unfortunately, I find her too sensitive for the changing riders in a trekking operation and somewhat underchallenged. She needs her human and her task. At the walk, she is always a bit faster, but at other gaits, I would rate her as “normal.” In addition to regular gaits, she also has a speed track.
So, she’s great for covering distance.
Recently, on a whim, she completed 48 km as the winner here in Saxony at Saxonia 2026. Thanks again to the rider who also produced the video.
